Well, they're used to help tell the story in the beginning. You see them in all kinds of Mexican celebrations. I loved the way Mexican art was used and woven into the narrative, you know, papel picados, which are those colorful banners made of tissue paper. They used Mexicanisms like no manches and hijole, like very Mexican slang, Mexican and Spanish. The mix of Spanish and English in the film felt really organic and not clunky or cheesy. And I have to say, there weren't any cringe-worthy moments for me. MERAJI: (Laughter) I have to say, I went in a little bit nervous because I know - for me, you know, when you put a movie like this in the hands of a big studio that's headed up by white guys and it's delving into a whole other culture and world, I worry that stuff is going to, you know, seem off. MERAJI: But I don't - I wouldn't call myself a Pixar movie person. I want to ask you, Shereen, how you felt about "Coco." Are you a Pixar movie person generally? THOMPSON: But think about how many movies have these terrible third act problems. With the amount of crying you do in the first 15 minutes of "Up" is the amount of crying. THOMPSON: It kind of turns the emotional arc of "Up" upside down. But by the time it gets to the end, the emotional payoff of this film is this enormous wallop. THOMPSON: And as such, it takes a while for it to fully sweep you into the story. THOMPSON: But it is an incredibly loving portrait of Mexican culture that doesn't seem to be taking a lot of shortcuts. I think that's kind of a lazy shorthand for this kind of thing, like, oh, it's a love letter to blank. THOMPSON: I've heard this movie described as a love letter to Mexico. But at the same time, that worldbuilding is so lovely and so gorgeously, artistically rendered that it's easy to kind of get swept up not only in the gorgeous imagery in the land of the dead, but the gorgeously vibrant day-to-day life that the film starts out in. And it took me a little while to get fully swept into the story. It does a lot of very patient world building. THOMPSON: I've even watched "The Good Dinosaur." HOLMES: Even for this show, you've watched many a Pixar movie. HOLMES: Stephen, I want to ask you first what you thought. HOLMES: And joining us from NPR west from our Code Switch team, our pal Shereen Marisol Meraji. Also joining us is Glen Weldon of the NPR arts desk. We already met NPR music's Stephen Thompson. In this encore episode of POP CULTURE HAPPY HOUR, we're talking about "Coco." So don't go away. HOLMES: The film was directed by "Toy Story 3's" Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina, who's been at Pixar for a decade but gets his first directing credit here. And like the heroes of a lot of quests, all he really wants is to go home and follow his dreams. He finds himself in the land of the dead, where he learns about the importance of memory and how we tell the stories of our families. The 2017 Disney-Pixar movie "Coco" is about a Mexican boy named Miguel who has an adventure on Dia de los Muertos, a holiday dedicated to remembering the dead.īENJAMIN BRATT: (As Ernesto, singing) Remember me. This will open the 2D Animation workspace and with a grease pencil object selected and in the "Draw" mode with the Draw Tool Selected. Click "File" in top left corner and select "New" > "2D Animation" from the dropdown list.If this works.wonderful! if not, keep reading. so that could be getting in the way.but let see if we can help you. Start drawing with you iPad.(I have no idea what application your using to draw with. If you new to Blender.Welcome! if you not and having trouble, a really simple things would download a fresh copy of Blender from and that is wrist killer. If you are using Grease pencil, there could be a couple things that are causing the issue. then using pen and pad this way requires a bit of radio-ulnar deviation of wrist (combined with flexion/extension ofc) because one does not want arm/wrist to rub (or displace) the pad. i actually might consider using Pad+pen as regular mouse replacement: all inputs that are done with regular mouse would be done using touchpad/pen. But since moving mouse, keyboard, tablet and/or spacemouse on table is a bit pain between buttocks. They are quite handy, since they can be move away easier and they can be positioned so that they can be used as secondary screen. I would say consider twice before using large touch screens - and you if decide to get one, dont use it like regual screen.Īs for Pads or 13" screens. Or if you use flex stand, you need to move screen very often, or then find a way to use spacemouse without moving screen. When screen is sitting on desk tablestand you are constantly trying to reach screen with pen (which further than keyboard or spacemouse),you will raise your extented arm for each pen action you take. Take 3shape for example: most workflows requires keyboard intputs, and spacemouse is used to rotate objects constantly. If keyboard and mouses are required then issue is constantly moving screen - it takes effort to place screen again into proper position after it is moved out of the way. but that is just a wrist killer: using finger (pinching pen) while doing swiping motions is basically what causes issues while using regular mouse!Īnyway. Rotation and stuff can be done with pressing mouse and moving pen. In theory, a spacemouse can be attached to large screen (wacoms have huge frame area) so that ergonimics remain good. In theory you can program gestures to touchscreen to allow panning/zooming rotating etc, but using gestures to do those things is no where accurate as spacemouse. Keyboard can be virtualized (ofc it requires extra actions to use enable/disable virtual keyb) but spacemouse. Unfortunately this limits use of spacemouse and keyboard, since you cannot use them while "holding" large touch screen - you have to push screen away, or take some silly posture to use them. This would be the proper and most ergonimical way to use large screens with pen: you basically rest/support your yourself to screen (if standing, screen is one support in addition your own legs). Then again, hunching is not good for your mid/low back even if you are hunched while sitting.įlex arm stand is helpful in a way because it allowes you to move screen relatively easier into position where you can tilt an rotate screen to accommodate it to your position: however screen must still be 10-15 cm away from you and shoulder must be positioned near top right corner of the screen in order to have relaxed Reach to all sides of the larger screen. And then you might have proper position for arm to reach other side of the screen while shoulder relaxed. lets say 1/3 from the top right corner down (if you are right handed). Screen with table stand means that you have to tilt screen so that it almost is flat on table and then hunch over the screen to allow your shoulder to be. Remember: holding and moving extented arm (with pen in the hand) in a screen, that is positioned like regular screen, will absolutely kill your shoulders. In order to use pen ergonomically, you should move 22/24" screens 10-15cm away from your torso, in order to Reach all corners of display without having to raise arm (use shoulder) while arm is extented. Its not impossible, but requires compromises. Using any of these alone is not problem (since those large touchscreens can be positioned so that drawing and using pen is ergonimical) but rather trying to use different input methods combined. Problem is related to need of keyboard and mouse(s),and then using pen. But having said that, im not convinced that large screens can be used properly with Dental CAD (3shape) due nature of the application. Shoulders getting hammered is simply because large 22/24" touchscreens are used improperly. With its ability to view the Universe in longer wavelength infrared light, JWST will be capable of seeing some of the most distant galaxies in our Universe, certainly with more ease than than the visible/ultraviolet light view of Hubble. With JWST's larger mirror, it will be able to see almost the whole way back to the beginning of the Universe, around 13.7 billion years ago. This is because of the time it takes light to travel from the object to us. The further away an object is, the further back in time we are looking. It will also be in a place where the gravity of the Sun and Earth work together, making it easier to keep the satellite in place. It keeps the telescope far from the reflected radiation of the Earth, one of many choices designed to keep this highly sensitive telescope cool. It is being placed in such a remote place for several reasons. At 1.5 million kilometres away, far further than any human has ever travelled, if something goes wrong it won't be possible to head into space and fix it. Hubble famously had a small flaw in its mirror upon launch that required a mission into space to fix. However, being in space makes fixing things that go wrong considerably more difficult. They are also unaffected by the weather, which can be a big problem for astronomers. By being above the atmosphere they don't have to peer through the shifting air to see into deep space, granting them a clearer view than most ground-based telescopes can achieve. Space-based telescopes have a huge advantage over ground-based ones. This point is around 1.5 million kilometres further away from the Sun than the Earth is Instead it will sit at the Earth-Sun L2 Lagrange point. The Hubble Space Telescope orbits around the Earth at an altitude of ~570km What are the distances between the telescopes and Earth? This is why images taken using telescopes which detect infrared frequencies can pick out objects beyond these clouds, and appear clearer than those taken using other telescopes. Infrared light has a longer wavelength and can pass through objects in space that visible light is blocked by, such as gas and dust. However, there are many other forms of light we cannot see, both inside and outside our atmosphere. Our eyes have evolved to detect the band of the spectrum which is known as ‘visible light’, which is unsurprising given that our atmosphere blocks out many of the other wavelengths. Light travels in a range of frequencies along the electromagnetic spectrum. This means it won’t be able to see in ultraviolet light like Hubble, but will be able to focus on infrared bright objects like extremely distant galaxies JWST has been designed to focus on the infrared part of the spectrum from 0.6 (red light) to 28 microns (infrared). Instead it focuses its unique ultraviolet (0.1 to 0.4 micron) capabilities on work that cannot be done from the ground and its visible (0.4 to 0.8 micron) light instruments on producing the high resolution images we are most familiar with Its instruments can observe a small portion of the infrared spectrum from 0.8 to 2.5 microns, but not to the extent that James Webb can. Hubble’s main focus is on visible and ultraviolet light. What type of light do the telescopes see? Hubble I watch the film a second time a few days later and take a lot of notes. Until I’m completely immersed in a film, I assume that I don’t like it. It also contains a number of subtle moments throughout the film, such as when he is confused because Rikako did something and Yutakas shows up a few moments later. Instead of being a creep, Yutaka takes a closer look at his friend, Rikako, when he spies on him in the first. This sentence ends with a beautiful line: “You told me to come.” Taku is the only boy in the film who shows no interest in the girls. This is the first step in their friendship, and it lays out everything that we need to know. Their friendship can be seen clearly in the last act of the film. In the beginning of the film, it is clear that Yutaka truly appreciates Taku. He later discovers that she purchased a plane ticket to Tokyo with her best friend without telling him, and that she arranged to meet her father on the flight. She borrows money from Taku on the basis of losing her travel money, saying little more than two words for the rest of her life. The majority of the film’s events are told in flashback as he reminisces about his past. The story’s framing device is the return of a Taku from a high school reunion in Kochi, using an older Taku as a frame. Studio Ghibli’s closest attempt to make a B-Tier film was released in 1993, as the Japanese company released its deepest film. Ultimately, Lee argues that Ocean Waves is a film that deserves to be celebrated for its queer sensibility. The film’s use of color and light also contribute to its queer aesthetic. Lee argues that the film’s focus on friendship and love between two young men challenges normative ideas about masculine and feminine roles. In “Is Ocean Waves a Queer Film?,” Christopher Lee examines the ways in which the film subverts traditional ideas about gender and sexuality. |
